If one thing bodes well for me, it’s that the Internet is always there. I apologize to all readers out there for my lack of updates for the better part of 3 months. Of late I’ve been working on the newest project my company, Sledgehammer Games, is producing. We’ve released our latest website filled with job postings, pictures and info on everything in and around the office. Check it out at www.sledgehammergames.com
I’ll posted more about the ongoing project I’m involved in as soon as I can.
Heading out to the Game Developers Conference this past weekend was filled with so much useful information. I attended a talk from Naughty Dog’s lead programmer, Travis Mcintosh.
The game was basically designed around getting very lifelike animations in game with tons of variety, all while trying to maintain a runtime animation budget. A lot of information was learned from this talk and it was perhaps the most informative I’ve ever been to at a GDC. Props to the Naughty Dog team to a brilliant presentation!
Tons on new stuff in Maya 2011, animation and UI improvements are at the top of my list for sure!

It’s official, I’ve finally settled in to my new location with all my friends and colleges at Sledgehammer Studios. The location is new, fun and full of all the convenieces of home (which is good because I imagine I’ll be spending lots of time there).

At my studio we’ve been using Maya 2010 and among all of the updates, the best animation addition that they have ever done was to add layers. Even though they have been present since 2009, Dead Space was still on 2008. Therefore I was never privy to the upate.
The animation layering system allows for an all new way of adjusting animations poses, timing and ever adding polish. In the game industry time is of the essence and I can definately say this simple tool addition has increased iteration times on my shots by 3 times.
So being part of a new company means that information is not sharable that you otherwise hope would be. For months I’ve had to keep a tight lip about where I work and what I was doing. Even though I still can’t comment on the project we’re working on, I can say that I work for one of the smallest developers in the industry… yet one of the largest publishers!
A couple of days ago, my company launched their brand, Sledgehammer Games. As part of Activision, we’re definitely on our way to produce one of the most exciting games I’ve ever had the pleasure to work on. More to come, but for now, have a look around:

I thought I’d share this. While I’m not a fan of everything being stored on the internet and NOT on my own machine… some how chrome’s simplicity is oddly attractive.

So to start off this post I must say that being as how video games are why I have the job that I do, it only is natural to say that my days have been filled with work and games. To start off I’ve been exploring the world of Modern Warfare 2. Currently it is the highest selling video game of all time. To say that the action, polish and quality of this game is nothing short of extraordinary would be an understatement. The animation is quite possibley some of the cleanest and polished that I’ve seen in a long time. Put that together with the intense action and you have a game that lives up to it’s predecessor. I’m not saying that it’s better than the original, but being the highest selling gamen history, I will say that it’s definately well deserved. I’ve never been a fan of FPS’s, however this is one series that has made me take a fresh look at the genre.
On to work, things are really heating up and we’ve almost got our tech solidified. Soon I’ll be back to doing what I love, animating… and based on the amount of creative idea’s we’ve had on our game I can say it’s going to be one hell of a ride. It’s terrific being on the front of something that has the potential to do real great things. But, as always, it’ll require a lot of hard work, responsibility and sleepless nights. Hopefully I’ll be better for it in the end, and my work will show true.
